Thursday Billboard Update - 3/31/11

F.A.M.E.
Chris Brown's F.A.M.E. didn't reach the 1 million sold plateau he was hoping for, but it does reach #1, selling 271,000 copies first week. While Chrisqo has had an album that's sold more first week, this is his first career #1. Coming in at #2 is Jennifer Hudson's I Remember Me with 165,100 sold. Kirk Franklin's Hello Fear debuts at #5 with a robust 78,800 sold. Last, but not least, Bobby V's (I'm assuming he's officially dropped the Valentino?) Fly On The Wall at #9 with 37,600 sold.

Over on the Hot 100, we have a new #1 and its Katy Perry's E.T. featuring Kanye West. The top debut this week is Wiz Khalifa's No Sleep blasting off at #6. And sadly Bruno Mars' Grenade finally exits the top 10 this week. But look on the bright side, maybe this will finally put an end to people making the fucked out jokes about not being willing to catch a grenade for anyone.

A Bacon Sundae? Word, Denny's? Word??

Denny's Bacon Sundae
There I was, writing about the Cavs beating the Heat, when a Denny's commercial came on promoting "Baconalia." Baconalia is Denny's "celebration of bacon" where it introduces 7 new bacon-based dishes. One of those dishes: the Maple Bacon Sundae. That's right, ice cream and bacon, or as I like it to call it "the cross over point between health and heart disease" (yeah it's a bit lengthy, but so won't your life be if you think it's a good idea to eat this). Here's a description of the new dish from Dennys.com:

Bacon makes a classic ice cream sundae even more awesome. We start with maple flavored syrup, and a scoop of rich, creamy vanilla ice cream and then a generous sprinkle of our diced hickory-smoked bacon. Add another sweet layer of syrup and vanilla ice cream topped with even more bacon and a drizzle of syrup.

Hey Denny's, get the FUCK outta here with this bullshit! Did KFC's Double Down sandwich really need a retarded sibling?

And what ever happened to restaurants trying to get us fat the old fashioned way by packing our daily allotment of calories in one serving of an awesome sounding meal? This shit both looks and sounds gross, it's the new Kat Stacks. This sundae is the food equivalent of Lil B's lyrics, confusing and nonsensical. If I wanted pork on my sundae I'd write T.I. in prison and ask him if I could borrow Tiny to reenact Ali Larter's infamous scene from "Varsity Blues."

...Too far?

Yeah, you're probably right, but this shit looks/sounds nasty as hell. Like Adam Carolla said when Baby Gaga came out, we already know ice cream is good, stop fucking with it and work on something else. Thank you. You lose, good day, sir!

Celebrate Now, Get Re-Depressed When You Realize You're Still In Cleveland

Cleveland Cavaliers' Baron Davis raises his arms in celebration after hitting a shot during the fourth quarter of their NBA basketball game against the Miami Heat in Cleveland March 29, 2011.
So this is what it feels like to be a Knicks fan? Oh well, at least it only happened once and not 3 times like it did to them.

Now, as odd as this might sound, I'm not mad even mad about this loss. Nope, not at all. This game meant nothing to us and everything to them. Cleveland is probably having a national championship-esque celebration in their dirty streets right now while planning a victory parade for tomorrow.

Of course I would've liked to win, but at the end of the day, we'll be playing in late April and they'll be planning vacations. I mean, this is probably the best night Boobie Gibson has head since he rawed Keyshia Cole for the first time. Dan Gilbert is probably just now leaving the Cavs locker room after taking a dump at LeBron's old locker. I'm just saying.

Anyway, you know who has got to be most pissed about this loss? The Celtics. They've been tirelessly trying to give us the #2 seed and this is how we repay them. Earlier I contemplated writing a new column called "We Don't Believe You" about the Celtics recent "struggles" because I think they're trying to avoid the Knicks in the first round. And even more so than just them trying to avoid them, I think they want us to play them. Not beyond belief.

Look, all I'm saying is don't be shocked if they C's don't show up when we play 2 Sundays from now.

Bow Wow - Here I Go Freestyle

Since I just posted the video where Snoop Dogg brought out Mystikal in B.R., I figured I might as well post this as well. Here I Go is definitely one of the dopest beats in Hip-Hop history, and it HARD to fuck up when spitting over it.

Speaking of the Here I Go beat, I was thinking about creating a list of the illest beats in Hip-Hop history. Me and Andy flirted with this idea back in about 2006 and never did it, but I think now is the time for it. If you have any suggestions don't hesitate to let me know.

On another note, isn't Nicki from the Caribbean? I'd expect her to be less stiff. Damn New York!

This Week In Flops 3/29/11

Britney Spears - Femme Fatale
Coming in at #1 next week will be Britney Spears' Femme Fatale, the only thing left to settle now is how much she'll sell. Britney's 2008 effort Circus moved 505,000 first week, and while I don't think this album will reach those heights, it should still be an great opening week. My guess is 375-450k.

Wiz Khalifa - Rolling Papers
Wiz Khalifa is arguably the hottest rapper in the game right now (overall, not musically), now it's time to see if that heat can translate into record sales. Generally, weed-based rappers don't perform well, but I think Cruella Khalifa has a good shot at that #2 spot. For him, I'm going with 115-150k.

Snoop Dogg - Doggumentary
I can't think of a Snoop Dogg album less anticipated since Doggumentary the No Limit days. Now I'm not saying the album sucks or anything, but its been a LONG time since Dogg has had little-to-no buzz surrounding an album.

Regardless, its hitting stores today, and I'm expecting sales in the range of 50-90k.

Mary Mary - Something Big
This is the first time I've had a gospel album on TWIF, so I'm not familiar with what they usually sell. And yes, that is a built in excuse because I expect to be totally wrong with my guess of 30-60k.

E-40 - Revenue Retrievin': Graveyard Shift
E-40 - Revenue Retrievin': Overtime Shift
I'm not sure we needed dual E-40 albums in consecutive years, but nevertheless he's back with Graveyard and Overtime Shirt of his Revenue Retrievin' series. Sales of both album should be nearly identical once again, and I'm guessing 10-15k.

It looks like he found those dreads in a box in marked "8 Mile memories" buried DEEP in Eminem's garage. Didn't he write the screenplay for this shit anyway? Were the dreads that essential to the story line?

F.A.M.E.
Busy week and first up we have Chris Brown's 2nd album post-Rihanna beat down, F.A.M.E. Earlier today Chrisqo had a meltdown of sorts at Good Morning America after being asked some light questions about Rihanna. Verdict: publicity stunt. You mean to tell me this nigga couldn't keep his cool after being asked some simple questions about his legal situation? I don't buy it.

Everybody who wasn't gonna buy the album really isn't now, but his fans that were on the fence probably will now because they're gonna allow themselves to be brainwash into think Chrisqo is being picked on. He effectively rallied the base, I can't be mad at that. It should be a good week for him because of this, so I'm guess he does between 150-200k first week.

Jennifer Hudson
Next up is Jennifer Hudson's I Remember Me. I can't lie, I don't know much about this album, but I still think it's gonna be good for at least 80,000. I'm gonna go with 80-110k.

W.A.R.
Pharoahe Monch's last album did about 12,000 first week in 2007, and I think W.A.R. will do about the same. I'm guessing 8-15k for Pharoahe.

Gucci Mane
I have no idea if this is an album or a mixtape, but there's a video out, so I'm just gonna treat it like am album. Whatever, no one cares, 5-15k.

Fab Five Backlash: The Common Sense Fail

"For me, Duke was personal. I hated Duke, and I hated everything I felt Duke stood for. Schools like Duke didn't recruit players like me. I felt like they only recruited black players that were Uncle Toms.

I was jealous of Grant Hill, he came from a great black family. Congratulations. Your mom went to college, and was roommates with Hillary Clinton. Your dad played in the NFL [and was] a very well spoken and successful man. I was upset and bitter that my mom had to bust her hump for 20-plus years. I was bitter that I had a professional athlete that was my father, that I didn't know. I resented that, more so than I resented him. I looked at it as, 'they are who the world accepts, and we are who the world hates.'"

What you see above is a word-for-word transcript of Jalen Rose talking about Duke in ESPN's "Fab Five" documentary. I thought it was important to post it both in video and print form to further illustrate how stupid it is we're having a national discussion demonizing Rose for emotions he felt as a teenager. Somehow fools like Jason Reid and (especially) Jason "Uncle Ruckus" Whitlock have deleted all of those words, enhanced "Uncle Tom" to font size 72, made it bold, and focused an attack on Rose with it. After that, Grant Hill decided to chime in with a response column for The New York Times to show off his awesome Duke education (which clearly didn't include any courses on common sense or attention to detail). I have one word to describe all of their efforts: BULLSHIT!

Now, before I individually detail why everyone anti-Jalen Rose is full of shit, I wanted to take a minute to discuss what was actually said and what it actually meant.

Documentary: Noun, a movie or TV program presenting facts and information, especially about a political, historical, or social issue.

"The Fab Five" was a movie/TV program that presented facts and information. Its purpose is to give us a more in-depth look into an event or time in history by having the people involved tell their story. Not my story, not your story, but their story. Now, with that being said, can someone please give me a common sense reason why I should be enraged at Jalen Rose, a 38 year-old man, for sharing how he felt as a 17 or 18 year-old kid... in a documentary? In 2008, I FELT like shooting someone after I heard my cousin was imprisoned on some BS. Today I FELT like calling my supervisor a cunt. Guess what though? I didn't shoot anyone and my supervisor is still an unknowing cunt. If there's a documentary on my life in 20 years, will I be seen as a currently angry, supervisor hater because I expressed how I felt at the time? My guess is no.

Oh yeah, and while you're trying to find that common sense reason I should be mad at Rose, I'll also be needing someone to point out the part in the documentary where he calls black Duke basketball players Uncle Toms. I saw/heard/read the part when he said he FELT like they were Uncle Toms, but I must've missed the part where he actually said "Black Duke basketball players are Uncle Toms." Damn snack breaks.

In the meantime, lets discuss the three stooges of this made up controversy.

First up is Jason Reid. Reid's angle is that Rose still feels like black Duke basketball players are Uncle Toms, despite the fact he said he didn't. Wait a minute, I thought the problem was that he called black Duke ballers Uncle Toms (even though he didn't)? Now the issue is that you THINK he feels a certain way he shouldn't, despite him never saying he did? Really, that's the angle you're going with? ...........Really?

On to the personification of Uncle Ruckus, aka Jason Whitlock. If there's a way to make black athletes look bad, especially if they're involved with ESPN in anyway way, shape, or form, this guy is all over it. I guess the whole working for Rupert Murdoch thing is finally starting to kick in. Anyway, Whitlock's angle is that he hates ESPN, thinks the Fab Five was overrated, and they're legacy and cultural impact should be overlooked because they didn't win a national championship. Also, he thinks the documentary never should've been made, nor should Jalen Rose have been allowed the opportunity to produce it. In the pile of bull excrement Whitlock called a column, he agreed that Duke only recruits a certain type of player. Isn't that pretty much what Rose, who he's attacking, said on this clip from 1&10 Uncle Whitlock attempted to mock on Twitter?

In all honesty, I don't even think Whitlock knows why he's mad. He's just a confused Uncle Ruckus looking for a new way to "shat" on the World Wide Leader for firing him. I mean, damn, if anybody should be able to relate to Rose feeling bitter and anger towards something/someone, shouldn't it be Uncle Whitlock? Seventeen year-old Jalen Rose's feelings towards Duke = 43 year-old Jason Whitlock's feelings toward ESPN. I'm finding it harder and harder to take him seriously by the column.

Last up is Grant Hill. I've been a fan of Hill's for a LONG time (the GH4's were my first basketball player's sneakers and I literally wore them out), but his NYT column was some biggity bullshit. Regardless, the consensus opinion is approval for the well-written piece. Am I the only one who actually read it? I must be, because I refuse to believe I'm the only person with enough common sense to recognize Hill went on a misguided jag against Rose.

The column read like he didn't even see the documentary and was responding to a friend's account of what was said. In the second paragraph Hill loss me. He said Rose pathetically called all black Dukies Uncle Toms and disparaged his parents. Really Grant, that's what he said? I heard that he was jealous of you and bitter he couldn't have your life, but definitely didn't hear him, or any of the other Fab Fivers interviewed, call anyone an Uncle Tom or disparage your parents for their achievements. (Side note: I'm still waiting to be shown the part in "The Fab Five" where Rose calls all black player at Duke Uncle Toms.)

If, for whatever reason, Hill didn't completely understand what Rose and the Fab Five were trying to convey, why not just contact them and ask for clarification instead of making the equivalent of a Hip-Hop diss record? You mean to tell me there was no better solution for Hill's issues than to take to the laptop and write that misguided column? I refuse to believe that as well.

And as far as being called a "bitch and worse," if anybody should be angry about what was said, it should be Christian Laettner. Rose essentially kissed Hill's ass and tickled his ball, especially when compared to his and the Fab Five's feelings towards Laettner. Rose said he was jealous of you and that you came from a great black family, boo-fucking-hoo. Laettner was called an overrated soft pussy bitch (sorry for the lack of commas, but it sounds better as a singular insult, almost like something you'd hear on a voice mail left by Mel Gibson)! His response to it: "[It was] kind of funny."

If Laettner can take it in the spirit in which it was meant, why couldn't Hill? Again, this was all how they FELT as teenagers. Let's all hope the ways we FELT as teens don't get overexposed and taken out of context across the nation.

R.I.P. Nate Dogg

R.I.P. Nate Dogg
Man, I'm filled with so much sadness and grief right now because of the loss of the legendary Nate Dogg. And I don't wanna hear none of that "West Coast legend" BS, Nate was a legend, legend. He didn't make hits with one side, he had hits with West Coast artists, East Coast artists, down South artists, the man was just a legend.

Nate will be remembered most for doing hooks (and please, Lord, PLEASE don't let T-Pain record some auto-tune bullshit tribute songs), and his resume is staggering, but don't sleep on his solo career either. I remember when my homies Jon Erik and Nelson put me up on his second album Music & Me by playing Backdoor, and I was instantly hooked. Soon after that, the whole album was in HEAVY rotation on my old CD player. I'm actually listening to Backdoor as I type this. Its so timeless that it could come out right now and get play, even though it got slept on back in 01-02.

I also remember back in the 90's when my cousin Donte used to draw that cat in a suit from Nate's first album G-Funk Classics, Vol. 1 & 2. Good times, man. Who didn't like Nate Dogg? I mean, I know some of these young buck didn't know him because he had never recorded a record with Waka Flocka or Justin Bieber, but musically, you'd be hard pressed to find another artist from the 90's and beyond more approved of across the board than Nate D-O-double G.

And you know what? Nate passing away is probably for the best, and I'll give you 2 reasons why: 1) From all accounts, Nate has been really suffering since his second stroke, and who wants to leave life suffering every day? 2) The music industry is all but dead right now, Nate Dogg worked with so many artists from so many places that when radio stations start playing tribute records it should be a small jolt for Hip-Hop overall.

Welp in closing, that smooth voice will be missed, but I thank God he was able to share his gift with the world for as long as he did. Hopefully Dr. Dre won't use this as an excuse to delay Detox again, though it would be the first viable one he's ever had. That West Coast sound ain't the same without Nate, and Akon definitely isn't filling either of those shoes.

I talked about Biggie Day, McDonald's trying to order for you, and of course, the Miami Heat pre-Lakers win. Enjoy!
