Heat Retire Zo's No. 33

I got to see a lot of this nearly 30 minute ceremony last night and it was actually quite moving. I still gotta wonder why they did it when the Heat played the Magic since it was clear they'd most likely lose the game (April 12th against the Knicks at the triple-A is just sitting there open). All in all, I still enjoyed it and I'm glad to see it happen. Its good to have a Heat player retired for the organization and not just Michael Jordan and Dan Marino lol.

(On a side note, I gotta wonder how Will Hatcher feels about this because we know he doesn't like Zo as evident by this video titled "Fuck Alonzo Mourning!!" I gotta remember to ask Andy to ask him his feelings about this lol.)

Heat To Retire Zo's #33 Jersey

Finally the Miami Heat franchise will retire a jersey number that was actually worn by one of their own (true story, the only 2 jersey numbers retired in Heat history are Michael Jordan's and Dan Marino's). On March 30th, the Heat will officially retire Zo's #33 and rightfully so. Zo definitely deserves it, I don't care what Will Hatchers says lol.

Anyway, the Heat should go ahead and reserve a spot next to Zo for D-Wade's #3 jersey after tonight's performance in the Heat's 120-115 win. Wade had 46 points, 10 assists, 8 boards, 4 steals, and 3 blocks! Oh, and 24 of those 46 came in the fourth after the Knicks busted Wade's lip on a fucked up no call. Don't tug on Superman's cape.

Zo Retires

After 15 seasons in the NBA, Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning has decided to retired today. This is sad to see as a fan of those late 90s Heat teams that boasted names like Zo, Hardaway, Mashburn, and Majerle. Man, that was a good ass team. Trust me as someone who watched a good portion of their games back then.

Anyway, now that Zo is retired the debate over whether he should go to the Hall Of Fame is now underway. As a basketball fan I give an emphatic YES. He is a 7-time All-Star and 2-time Defensive Player of the Year that played the game with the heart and passion few have ever. Unfortunately, he missed major time in his prime due to his kidney ailment, but I don't think that should be held against him as a negative. Right now he's #10 on the all-time blocks list, but just imagine where he'd be if he hadn't missed so much time following his 8th year in the league. He basically missed 3 whole seasons because of his kidney.

And on top of all that, he should have won MVP in the 98-99 strike shortened season. Zo averaged 20 points, 11 boards, and 4 blocks a game. Karl Malone won it that year averaging 23, 9, and .57 which were all down from the previous season.

Happy Trails To Alonzo Mourning

Looks like this is the end for big Zo. Its not official yet, but I don't see how he could come back from this one. As you might have heard he tore the patellar tendon in his right knee in a overtime lost to the Hawks tonight.

Its really sad to see because growing up playing ball in South Florida, Zo was huge! After I started to really gain interest and an intense passion for the sport in about '96 I remember my uncle James and/or my cousin Nick watching those old 96-97 Heat with Zo, Tim Hardaway, Jamal Mashburn, Voshon Lenard, and P.J. Brown (sick squad!). Zo was just the man at the time since we got to see them play all 82 games on Sunshine Network lol. Those old Heat teams just bring back special memories for me (even though Kevin Garnett was still my favorite player) and its hard to see Zo going out like this.

Well, there's still an outside chance he can return for the end of this season, depending on how the surgery and rehab goes, but this has got to be at least a 6 month recovery process. At least he got his ring before it was over, happy trails Zo. [FULL STORY]
