Thursday Billboard Update - 8/4/11

Kelly Rowland's Here I Am debuts at #3 with 77,100 albums sold. Pretty decent for Kelly Rowland. Amy Winehouse's Back To Black doesn't top the charts this week like I guessed, but it did rise 5 spots to #4 with 53,700 albums sold in the past week. Still not sure how it's not a cataloged album, but whatever. Rejoining the top 10 at #10 is Bad Meets Evil's Hell: The Sequel with 26,000 more albums sold.

Not too much going on on the Hot 100, Britney Spears' Go does crack the top 10 at #9.

Thursday Billboard Update - 3/24/11

Adele's 21 goes 2-1 and returns to the top of the Billboard 200 this week with another 98,000 copies sold. Travis Barker's Give The Drummer Some debuts at #9 with sales of 28,000 first week.

The top 10 of the Hot 100 gets shaken up quite a bit as every track is in a new spot, except Lady Gaga's Born This Way, which remains at #1. Four new records also invaded the top 10 this week starting with Black Eyed Peas' Just Can't Get Enough flying 22-5 in a week. Bursting onto the Billboard 200 this week is the UK's own Adele as her sophomore album 21 claims the #1 spot with 351,600 sold. Obviously that's the best first week so far this year, and as far as I'm concerned, it officially puts the nail in Amy Winehouse's coffin. As expected, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy comes in at #1 with 497,100 albums sold. And also as expected, Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday comes in at #2 with 376,000 sold. That's the 2nd highest opening week for a female hip-hop album in Billboard history (Lauryn Hill is #1). Finally, coming in at #9 is Ne-Yo's Libra Scale, which sold 112,500.

Thursday Billboard Update - 5/13/10

A lot is going on in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 today, but unfortunately only one of the albums pertains to us. That album is Toni Braxton's Pulse which moved 54,500 in its first week.

Its okay that not much concerning us is popping over on the 200 because the big news is happening on the Hot 100. That big news is Eminem's Not Afraid becoming just the 16th record (only 2nd Hip-Hop record) in Billboard history to debut at #1. I can't say that I saw this happening, but it definitely doesn't surprise me the way the internet exploded just when news broke the song would be coming out.

(Side note: Believe it or not, but this is just Eminem's 3rd #1 record in his career. The other 2?? Lose Yourself and Crack A Bottle. Freaky, right??)

Sade's Soldier Of Love moves another 190,500 and hold on to her #1 for a 2nd week. Nothing else really interesting happened in the top here so lets move on to the Hot 100.

The Black Eyed Peas' Imma Be does this week what I thought it'd do last week, and that's take over the #1 spot from Ke$ha's TiK ToK. Jumping into the top 10 at #10 is Trey Songz's Say Aah. Last week's #1, Lady Antebellum Need You Now, remains on top, but debuting at #2 is Lil Wayne's Rebirth. His abomination to Rock sold 176,000 in its first week. (Finally a semi-smart marketing move by Cash Money! I forgot he was even "going to jail" this week, and that's they dropped this piece of shit when they did. And now that he doesn't actually have to go to jail until NEXT month, I say it was a pretty nice bait and switch by the new Bad Boy. Take that, take that!)

Thursday Billboard Update - 2/4/10

Last week I warned to anticipate a huge week for the Hope For Haiti Now compilation album. This week that warning seems comical as the album only racks up 142,900, about 28,000 less than what we saw in its first 2 days of availability. I didn't anticipate the drop in coverage by the 24-hour news networks, and the lack of staying power of its 2 biggest tracks (Taylor Swift's Today Was A Fairytale fell 2-22 and Jay-Z, Bono, and Rihanna's Stranded fell 16-85). The big winner this week is Grammy award winning country group Lady Antebellum, whose Need You Now album moved 481,000 in its first week. Also debuting this week is Corinne Bailey Rae's The Sea at #7 with 53,400.

This got shaken up a bit this week on the Hot 100. The 2 tracks that debuted in the top 10 last week (Taylor Swift's Today Was A Fairy Tale at #2 and Justin Bieber's Baby at #5) fell out this week, and a former #1 (Jay-Z's Empire State Of Mind) did the same. Taking their spots are Black Eyed Peas' Imma Be finally breaking through at #4, Ludacris' How Low returning at #6, and Lady Antebellum's title track at #8. After their Grammy performance this past Sunday, don't be shocked if Imma Be takes over the top spot next week.

Susan Boyle's I Dreamed A Dream has a strangle hold on the charts right now moving 661,200 and denying Alicia Keys the #1 spot for the first time in her career. That's right, Element Of Freedom comes in #2 despite selling 419,700 in its first week. Also making the top 10 is Robin Thicke's Sex Therapy at #9 with 123,200 sold.

Not much going on on the Billboard 200 this week. The Black Eyed Peas' The E.N.D. jumps back into things with 39,600 sold this week and landing back in the top 10 at #6. Mario's new album D.N.A. (which I had no idea was coming out) debuted at #9 with 31,700 sold. Not bad for 0 promotion.

This week Jay Sean reclaims his spot atop the Hot 100 with his single Down. I'm not sure how much longer he can keep it up though because The Black Eyed Peas' Meet Me Halfway finally made it to the top 10 (17-9) and has its black eyes set on #1.

Thursday Billboard Update - 10/8/09

In an upset of epic portions, Mariah Carey's Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel not only doesn't get the #1 spot, but it doesn't even get the #2 either. Mariah's new shit starts off at #3 with a shocking 168,900 first week! Just last year her E=MC² did 463,000 in its 1st week. That's an substantial drop off for 1 year. I hate to say it, but this is what she gets for letting Gucci Mane hop on her track lol. By the way, Barbara Streisand (180,000) and Paramore (175,000) started out at #1 and #2 respectively.

In other top 10 news, Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 JUST missed the platinum barrier by less than 4,000 albums after selling 88,600 this week. One more week won't hurt.

In another bit of an upset, Jay Sean and his single Down finally knock the Black Eyed Peas out of the #1 spot on the Hot 100. BEP held down the top place for a record breaking 26 weeks with Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling.

Thursday Billboard Update - 9/24/09

Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 hangs on to his #1 spot with 297,913 copies sold in its 2nd week on shelves. He should be getting his platinum plaque in 2 weeks. Whitney's comeback album I Look To You bounces back to #2 this week and also goes gold with 155,600 in its 3rd week. KiD CuDi's debut album Man On The Moon shits on my prediction and sells 104,300 while coming in at #4. Drake's So Far Gone EP goes just over what I predicted and does 73,600 at #6. If he can do that with an EP filled with songs he gave out for free just months ago, imagine what Thank Me Later is gonna do. Right behind Drake is Lil Boosie at #7 as his Superbad sells 48,900. This is Boosie's first top 10 of his career.

A lot of action going on on the Hot 100 this week. Jay-Z and Drake dominate this week in a major way. Jay's Run This Town with Kanye West and Rihanna shows no signs of slowing down as it moves to a new high at #2. At #5 is Empire State Of Mind with Alicia Keys which sold 205,000 in digital downloads over the past week (shout out to Lil Mama lol). Drake makes his first dent with Forever featuring Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Eminem starting out at #8.
