Should The Knicks Trade Carmelo Anthony?

Today the New York Knicks loss their 5th straight game, and fell to 18-23, so I ask: Should the Knicks trade Carmelo Anthony?

On the surface, I know that question seems a bit extreme, but look at it this way: including February 6th when Melo got hurt in the first quarter, the Knicks were 7-1 with Jeremy Lin starting and Melo out, since he's returned to the lineup, they're just 2-7 (which kind of answers the question of if they could play together).

Now, I'm not saying New York can't get it together at some point, but it seems clear that Melo and Lin may not be able to co-exist, and the trade deadline is approaching this Thursday. Should the Knicks at least consider taking a few calls for the guy who was supposed to bring a championship to New York?

2012 NBA All-Star Starters Announced

There they are, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, and Derrick Rose for the East, and Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin, Andrew Bynum, Kobe Bryant, and Chris Paul for the West.

The first, and most obvious, snub is Kevin Love. I mean, all Big Love has done this year is average 25.3 points a game (4th in the NBA behind Kobe, LeBron, and Durant) and 13.6 rebounds a game (2nd in the NBA). Don't get me wrong, I totally get why Blake Griffin got the nod, but it's a shame someone can put together those type of numbers and not start in the All-Star game.

I'm fine with the rest, thought I wouldn't have been mad if Bosh started over Carmelo.

Random News Shit: NBA Trade Edition

1) Jazz Ship Deron Williams To The Nets
I know the nigga allegedly ran Jerry Sloan out of town, but gotdamn.

Man, how does a trade of this magnitude go under the radar like it did these days? I mean, all the NBA insiders were all over the James Johnson to Toronto trade, but nobody knew about this shit until a short while before it happened. Deron was still with the Jazz when my meeting at work this morning started, and by the time it wrapped up he was a Net. That's so insane to me.

Okay, while I try to wrap my brain around this trade happening seemingly out of nowhere, let's discuss the details of the transactions:

Nets get: Deron Williams, Dan Gadzuric, and Brandan Wright

Jazz get: Derrick Favors, Devin Harris, two first-round draft picks and cash considerations

Warriors get: Troy Murphy and a second-round pick in 2012

At first look at this trade it felt like the Nets gave up too much, but upon further review, I think this was a bit of a steal. (Well, besides the fact that from all account Deron Williams isn't at all happy about this trade and probably won't re-sign in 2012, and all.) Devin Harris is good, but he's no Deron Williams; that first round pick will most likely be hit or miss regardless with this weak upcoming draft class; and as far as Derrick Favors goes, I've never been impressed by him when I saw him play. Personally, I don't think he'll ever become a good player, but how bad did he have to look in practice that the Nets have given up on him already? I know Mikhail Prokhorov really wanted a superstar and all, but damn, the kid is a rookie. Oh well, I guess he looked at Andrew Bynum and all the other guys people always say have potential that never pan out and said fuck it.

2) Hawks & Wizards Swap Bibby & Hinrich
Here are the details:

Hawks get: Kirk Hinrich and Hilton Armstrong

Wizards get: Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, Maurice Evans, and a first-round pick

I understand why the Hawks would do this trade, but why would the Wizards? They get Mike Bibby, 2 scraps, and a late first-rounder in a weak draft. How did they improve exactly?

3) Carmelo, Billups Help Knicks Get A Win In NY Debut
Sadly they had to make their debut in those wack Knicks throwback jerseys, but other than that, it was a pretty good night. Melo hit 27 and grabbed 10 boards (though he took 25 shots and only made 10) while Billups chipped in with 21 points and 8 assists.

Finally, our national nightmare is over; Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire are teammates at last! If you haven't seen the whole trade break down, here's who's where now:

Knicks get: Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter and Renaldo Balkman.

Nuggets get: Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks' 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash.

Poor Michelle Trachtenberg. If I'm the Knicks I'm overall happy right now. Yeah, we just got rid of our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 12th best players AND won't have any room to bring any new pieces around our new players over the summer, but you got Carmelo. And at the end of the day, that's all that matters right? Right. Welp, hopefully Amare has more than a season or 2 left in those knees.

1) Three Team Deal For Carmelo Discussed
The 3-teamer that would land Melo in New York is the Knicks sending Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry to Minnesota, Minnesota sending Corey Brewer and a first-round pick to Denver, and Denver receiving Wilson Chandler from New York. Whatever, can we just finally get this nigga traded? I am so tired of hearing about this shit. It's the odds on favorite for Lamest Sports Story of 2011 and we're only 1 month and a few days in.

2) Cavs Drop 24th Straight Game; Make History
With their loss to the Blazers last night, the Cavaliers broke the NBA record for consecutive losses in a single season, breaking the 97-98 Nuggets record of 23. Next up on the schedule: the Dallas Mavericks.

I'm not gonna lie, I do feel kinda bad for the Cavs, but I still have no sympathy for the city of Cleveland or its fans. Either way, the Cavs falling like a rock are more reason LeBron should win MVP again than anything he's doing on the court right now.

3) LeBron & Randolph Win Player Of The Month For January
LeBron averaged 30.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.75 steals per game last month, and Zach Randolph averaged 22.4 points and 14.2 rebounds per game. Randolph also lead the Grizzlies to 11 wins in January and set a franchise record with a career-high 14 consecutive double-doubles.

This is LeBron James' 2nd Player of The Month award this season, but for some reason there's 2 or 3 guys who get mentioned before him in the MVP race. Not sure how that works, but okay.

No real surprises (especially on the East) but I did totally forget about Yao Ming. To be fair, the guy only played 5 games and shouldn't even have been on the ballot in the first place, so me forgetting him shouldn't be held against me.

Anyway, Kobe got the most votes overall with 2,380,016, and Dwight Howard came in 2nd with 2,099,204. Coming in 3rd with 2,053,011 votes? LeBron James. People sure do hate that guy, I tell ya. Another funny thing in the voting is that Jamal Crawford (246,130) actually got more votes than teammate Joe Johnson (224,571). $119 million well spent.

The reserves will be announced next Thursday (February 3rd) on TNT.

Mikhail Prokhorov Deads The Nets' Pursuit Of Carmelo

You gotta love Mikhail Prokhorov, and no, not because your might "disappear" if you don't. First, you gotta love his pronunciation of Carmelo as "Carmela." I know he does it because of his accent, but it's still awesome. And second, you gotta love his response when asked about Melo's willingness to play for the Nets. This is a shocker to no one. I knew somebody would be dumb enough to give Amare a huge contract, and I also figured nobody would be dumb enough to do it, but the Knicks. The Suns wouldn't even offer Amare more than a 3-yea deal, so that tells you a lot about what they think he has left.

Look, all I'm saying is don't be surprised if Amare is averaging 16 and 9 next season when not playing alongside Steve Nash. 4) JaMarcus Russell Arrested For Sippin' On The Sizzurp

You telling me Chris Bosh (24 and 11), Antawn Jamison (22 and 8), and Gerald Wallace (19 and 11) aren't all having better seasons than K.G.?? Hell, even David Lee (19 and 11) is having a better season than Garnett.

And out on the West, you telling me you can't make a argument that guys like Kevin Durant (29 and 7), Dirk Nowitzki (26 and 8), and Zach Randolph (21 and 12) should be starting over Timmy?? All of these guys are having better seasons than the person starting over them, but still, Iverson is the one everyone is up in arms about. I can't think if any Eastern conference stubs, but 2 others in the West are Al Jefferson and Kevin Durant. Al Jefferson had better stats than both Melo and D. West and Durant has really stepped it up this year, but both play on dreadful teams. Then again, so does Danny Granger and he made it averaging a single point more than KD.

Melo Out 3 Weeks With Broken Hand

Yep its broken BUT the Nuggets dodged a huge bullet here because I thought it'd keep him out for much longer. Then again, even when he comes back it might take him some time to get back in the groove of things. I don't think Denver can afford to loose their leading scorer for too long, especially with Iverson no longer in the line up. Even if they don't fall out of the playoff race while he's out, there's a large chance they'll fall out of contention for homecourt advantage which is probably the only way they'll get out of the first round.

Melo Suffers Probable Right Hand Fracture

In Denver's 135-115 win over Indiana it looks like they were the real losers in the end. Carmelo Anthony looks to have a fractured right hand after Jeff Foster tried to slap the ball out of his hand in the 3rd quarter. The Nuggets definitely got better when they traded off Iverson for Billups, but now shit is looking bleak. If Carmelo's hand really is fractured, I don't see the Nuggets going anywhere this year because he'll be out for most of the rest of the season, if not for the whole thing. As I told my homeboy, 'You can't play basketball with a broken hand,' and with Utah just 3.5 games behind, the Nuggets are most likely done. Tough break nigga (no pun intended).

Hey, if you're home tonight you might wanna check out the NBA on ESPN because they have 2 good ones tonight. First up at 8 is Kobe and the Lakers in South Florida to play D-Wade and the Heat followed by LeBron and the Cavs at 'Melo and the Nuggets. Four gold medal winning Team USA players going head up, should be some good stuff.

**UPDATE**

So far so good on this doubleheader as the Heat knock off the Lakers 89-87. It came down to a potential game-tying Kobe jumper that rimmed out at the buzzer. Wade also got that best of Kobe as he hit 35 to KB's 28, including a huge buzzer beating 3 off a near turnover to end the 3rd quarter. Great game. Welp its LeBron/Melo time, peace!
