Thursday Billboard Update - 3/7/13

Coming in at #1 for the first time in his career this week is Bruno Mars as his Unorthodox Jukebox slides a spots north with 95,000 copies sold. This is largely due to Amazon MP3 selling it for $1.99 last Tuesday and for $3.99 ever since (and that's still going on now, if you haven't checked the album out yet). Also benefiting from Amazon MP3's low pricing is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' The Heist, which climbs 16-4 this week. I'm sure being on SNL didn't hurt either.

Baauer enjoys yet another bogus week atop the Hot 100 and everything else remains static for the most part as well.

Thursday Billboard Update - 2/21/13

The sales impact of the Grammys finally shows up and the Billboard 200's top 10 reflects that with several old albums returning (2013 Grammy Nomineees, Taylor Swift, fun., and Maroon 5), a couple rising (Lumineers and Bruno Mars), and one making its way back to #1 (Mumford & Sons).

Some bullshit is popping over on the Hot 100 as Billboard and Nielsen has retardedly (new word alert!) decided to revamp its system to incorporate YouTube streaming, which allowed Baauer's much parodied Harlem Shake to debut at #1. This is stupid on many levels, but none more than the fact that only a small fraction of those streams came from people listening to the song past the first 30 seconds. PSY must be pissed (though it should be noted that Gangnam Style is up 22 spots 48-26 because of this).

In other, more logical, Hot 100 news, Rihanna grabs her 24th top 10 song (and passes Whitney Houston and the Rolling Stones who both have 23) as Stay soars 54 spots 57-3 in its 2nd week. (I'm sure the 29.5 million YouTube views had a lot to do with it.) And lastly, Drake's Started From The Bottom skies 53 spots 63-10 also in its 2nd week.

Thursday Billboard Update - 10/6/11

Oh how wrong I was about the shipment of J. Cole's debuts album Cole World: The Sideline Story. As it turns out, plenty copies were shipped and a robust 217,279 were purchased. That's damn good for anyone these days, and especially good for someone with no hit single on the radio. Dare I say the real is back? In other Billboard 200 news, Blink-182's reunion album Neighborhoods moved 151,463 and claimed the #2 spot this week.

Adele's Someone Like You rises back to the #1 position, bumping Maroon 5's Moves Like Jagger featuring Christina Aguilera to #2. B.o.B is back as his Strange Clouds featuring Lil Wayne debuts at #7. I'm still not sure who David Guetta is, but his song Without You with Usher hops into the top 10 (11-8). Rihanna's We Found Love also cracks the top 10 in its 2nd week jumping 16-9. This is Rihanna's 20th top 10 song on the Hot 100, making her the fastest solo artist to hit the career milestone. Congrats, baby.

This Week In Flops took a little break (okay, a 6 month break), but with that virus forcing me into a dry spell, I figured there was no better time than now to bring it back. It also didn't hurt that I'm now pretty sure J. Cole's album is going to flop.

Tonight a friend and I spent about 2 hours searching Best Buy and Target for his debut album only to come up empty. On the surface that's a great thing, because it means the album is selling. Then I realized there just wasn't many copies on display to begin with (the exact opposite of Lil Wayne albums because sadly there were rows and rows of Tha Carter IV and I Am Not A Human Being). That's not a good thing because fans can want to buy your album all they want, but they can't make the purchase if the albums isn't there.

Now, I'm not sure exactly how many copies Sony shipped, but I can see the "It's the label's fault, the album was undershipped" headlines in the distance. I'm going to continue to try to find a physical copy of the album, but I'm expecting low numbers next week when the SoundScan drops. I'm going with 25-50k for Cole.

**UPDATE**

First, I finally found a copy of Cole World. Thank goodness! And second, apparently Broward County stores were the only ones understocked because "industry prognosticators" say J. Cole's debut is headed for sales of 240,000-250,000 and the #1 spot. Man, it would be insane if that comes to fruition because Cole definitely never found his Slow Jamz.
