Gangnam Style Passes Bieber's Baby As Most Watched YouTube Video

My brother and I had been monitoring this for the past few weeks and it finally happened, Psy's Gangnam Style is now the most watched video in YouTube history. Gangnam Style passed Justin Bieber's Baby some time Saturday, and is well on it's way to becoming the first billion-view video in YouTube history. In fact, Psy's smash hit it moving at such an outrage pace that it's possible it could hit that billion-view mark before the year is up.

Remarkable, especially considering that it's only existed for the past 4 months. To put that into prospective, the NBA's YouTube channel has been around since November 2005 and currently has just under 980,000,000 views total. YouTube's most subscribed to user, Ray William Johnson, has been on YouTube since May 2008 and has 6.2 million subscriber, he "just" reached his 2 billionth view last month. Pys is the new king of YouTube.

Thursday Billboard Update - 8/9/12

To the surprise of no one, Rick Ross' God Forgives, I Don't takes over the #1 spot this week with 219,100 albums sold. Joss Stone's The Soul Sessions, Vol. 2 debuts at #10 with 24,000 sold.

Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe gets its 9th week atop the Hot 100, the longest run at #1 in 2012. Though I could care less about Carly Rae Jepsen, this begs the question "Why doesn't she have an album out?" Again, I don't care about her music, it just seems odd that someone with such a strong stench of one-hit wonder has no album out, even after 9 weeks at #1. (Side note: Don't front like you can't see yourself in 2022 watching "I Love The '10s: 2012 Edition" on VH3 and saying, "Hey, remember her?" when Call Me Maybe is discussed.)

Thursday Billboard Update - 7/26/12

As it turns out, life actually is good for Nas as his new album Life Is Good debuts at #1 with 149,000. Good to see Hip-Hop back on top.

Sadly, it's back to a lot of nothing on the Hot 100 this week.

Now give me a moment to highlight the random hypocrisy of Billboard. This week Frank Ocean's Channel Orange fell to #4 with 54,000 sold in its 2nd week, but those numbers don't include sales from Amazon because they sold it for $2.99 this past week. Billboard is alleging that it's their policy to disallow sales to count toward chart placement if the album is sold below its $3.49 minimum in the first 4 weeks of release. Wait, what? Just last June Lady Gaga's Born This Way set a then record for largest percentage sales drop in Billboard history. Born This Way fell 84.27% in its 2nd week largely because its first week sales were artificially enhanced by Amazon offering it for just 99¢ at times during the first week. So when Amazon sold Lady Gaga's album for 99¢ in its first week it was okay, but when they sold Frank Ocean's for $2.99 in its second week, all of a sudden there's a Billboard policy that says its not allowed? I call bullshit, unless they changed the policy immediately after the Lady Gaga debacle.

Thursday Billboard Update - 7/19/12

Frank Ocean's Channel Orange debuts at #2 with 131,000 sold, just behind the Zac Brown Band's Uncaged with 153,000 sold. Frank Ocean's sells mostly came from iTunes, as his physical CD only sold about 3,000 copies. If his newfound fans were looking for a place to direct their anger, Amazon would be that place because they offered the Zac Brown Band's album for only $3.99 all week, which helped them surpass Frank for the #1 spot. Just putting it out there.

The big news on the Hot 100 is P!nk's Blow Me (One Last Kiss) soaring 58-9 in it's 2nd week on the charts. Also entering the top 10 is Flo Rida's Whistle, which rises 5 spots 12-7.
