Thursday Billboard Update - 9/27/12

P!nk's The Truth About Love is the new #1 album in the country with a hefty 280,000 albums sold. Shockingly enough, this is her first #1 album, though it's not the first time she's sold over 200,000 records in the first week. Coming in at #2 is Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music album Cruel Summer, with 205,000 copies sold. Normally I wouldn't mention this, but Carly Rae Jepsen's album Kiss finally came out and it starts at #6 with 46,000 copies sold. While that would be a lot for some (see Kreayshawn below), it doesn't seem like much for the woman with the biggest single of 2012, Call Me Maybe. The scent of one-hit wonder is getting stronger.

Only one major change in the top 10 this week, and that Psy's megahit Gangnam Style flying 9 more spots (11-2) and being on the verge of being the #1 song in America next week. Whoa, crazy, crazy! (Shout out to the 06010 and Fantasy Focus Football Podcast.)

The Billboard 200 1-10
first week debuts in bold

1. P!nk - The Truth About Love (1)
2. G.O.O.D. Music - Cruel Summer (2)
3. The Killers - Battle Born (3)

4. Dave Matthews Band - Away From The World (1-4)
5. Little Big Town - Tornado (2-5)
6. Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss (6)
7. Grizzly Bear - Shields (7)
8. Bob Dylan - Tempest (3-8)
9. The Avett Brothers - The Carpenter (4-9)
10. Ben Folds Five - The Sound Of The Life Of The Mind (10)
  • Tech N9ne's E.B.A.H. debuts at #30 with 14,000 sold.
  • Brother Ali's Mourning In America & Dreaming In Color debuts at #43 with 10,100 sold.
  • Kreayshawn's Somethin' Bout Kreay debuts at #112 with a measly 3,900 copies sold. It's safe to say 2 things now: 1) This is the last we'll hear about Kreayshawn and 2) somebody (or some staff) at Sony is now unemployed for giving her a $1 million record deal last year.

The Billboard Hot 100 1-10
first time top 10's in bold

1. Maroon 5 - One More Night (1-1)
2. Psy - Gangnam Style (11-2)
3. fun. - Some Nights (3-3)
4. Taylor Swift -  We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together (2-4)
5. P!nk - Blow Me (One Last Kiss) (5-5)
6. Flo Rida - Whistle (4-6)
7. Justin Bieber - As Long As You Love Me (6-7)
8. Owl City & Carly Raw Jepsen - Good Time (9-8)
9. Alex Clare - Too Close (8-9)
10. Ellie Goulding - Lights (7-10)
  • Ne-Yo's Let Me Love You hops 9 spots 37-28.
  • Christina Aguilera's Your Body debuts at #34.
  • Ed Sheeran's The A Team jumps 9 spots 61-52.
  • P!nk's Try debuts at #56.
  • Kanye West and R. Kelly's To The World debuts at #70.
  • Kendrick Lamar's Swimming Pools (Drank) slides 11 spots 92-81.
  • The Game's Celebration featuring Chris Brown, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, and Lil Wayne debuts at #82.
  • Carly Rae Jepsen debuts at #87 with her new single Beautiful with Justin Bieber.
  • Usher's Numb debuts at #97.

Kevin Hart Hosting The VMAs

While this is obviously excellent news, I have to ask why it didn't happen sooner? There was no host last year and Kevin Hart kept coming out and doing things, so why not just have had him hosting last year too? Oh well, I'm still happy for the new King of Comedy.

I'm also happy for my Dallas Cowboys because MTV clearly moved the VMAs up to a Thursday to distract me from the Cowboys-Giants season opener. What they hadn't anticipated was the NFL deciding to bump the game up to Wednesday so it wouldn't conflict with the Democratic National Convention.

Ha! In your face, MTV!

I don't care what anybody says, one of the higher-ups at MTV hates the Cowboys and is doing this shit on purpose. If the NFL hadn't bumped the game up a day, it would've been the 3rd time since 2007 the VMAs coincided with the Dallas Cowboys season opener. Coincidence? I think not.

(Side note: I wonder how much the Romney campaign had to pay MTV to randomly move the VMAs to Thursday for the first time sine 2006 to distract from the DNC?)

The Sad Aftermath Of The Auto-Tune Era

One of the many downsides of the Auto-Tune Era (2006-2010) is that there would eventually come a day when you'd have to sing your song live without it, and possibly sound even worse than the cheap effect made it sound in the first place.

Generally, this concern would only come into play for folks who thought they could be singers because of it, like T-Pain, but deep down in the dark ages that I've dubbed the Auto-Tune Era, a rapper made a full album of auto-tuned singing and called it 808s & Heartbreak. The rapper I'm speaking of? Sadly, Kanye West. (Side note: I'm only recapping this because I assume you all have suppressed any memory of 808s & Heartbreak's existence into the deepest, darkest, and least visited corners of your mind, like me.)

Here's a video of Kanye West at Coachella in 2011 attempting to sing one of his atrocities from 808s & Heartbreak auto-tuneless.

Sad, sad, sad. Kanye wanted to be able to sing so bad in this video, but reality just wouldn't let him, and he literally ended up screaming at the end. Enough to bring a tear to a grown man's eye (Side note: whether that tear is a tear of sadness or a tear of laughter is entirely up to you).

I know it's cool to make fun of Drake because of his singing ways, but next time you go to crack a (most likely bad) joke about him, just remember that there are guys like Kanye who would kill to have his vocal ability in this post-auto-tune world we're living in. You remember, and you remember good.

Kanye West & 50 Cent Tweet Album Covers

G.O.O.D. Music's Cold Summer album cover is about as retarded looking as you'd expect something being chosen by Kanye West would be, but it's all because you know the music is gonna be great. Still no release date, but again, it'd be dumb to drop Cold Summer in the fall, so expect it some time in August.

Shortly after Kanye tweeted out his cover, 50 Cent followed suit for the album he's supposed to be dropping himself on July 3rd. Take a look:

And that isn't it, there's also a .gif version with the fire blazing, check that out here.

Much better than Kanye's cover, but Kanye's music will be better. Go figure.

Fat Joe - Pride N Joy (feat. Kanye West, Miguel, Jadakiss, Mos Def, DJ Khaled, Roscoe Dash & Busta Rhymes)

Here's a new single from Fat Joe that features waaaay too many niggas. Check it out.

"What happened to the Jadakiss, Mos Def and Busta Rhymes verses?" I'm sure that's what you're asking, and really I don't know. If you're also wonder why it says they're featured on the song, it's because they are. Jada, Mos, and Busta, along with DJ Khaled, are the collage of voices you hear on the chant part, while that's Miguel and Roscoe Dash you hear on the shitty hook. A bit much, right? Right.

On another note, are we trying to bring back auto-tune already? Really? Rappers, please let that shit remain dead. Please.

Jay-Z & Kanye Music Featured In "The Great Gatsby" Trailer

Well that sure was random...and hilarious! I mean, it's not as random and hilarious as when they put Dubstep in the "Red Tails" trailer, but it's definitely up there on the unintentional comedy scale.

On another note, did we really need another Great Gatsby movie? I mean, if Leo decided to do it, I'm sure it's an awesome film, but come the fuck on Hollywood, come up with some new ideas!

(Side note: How cool is it that real life friends Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire did a movie together? That usually doesn't happen with actors, unless one of them is producing the film.)

Kanye West Announces G.O.O.D. Album Title, Film

Cruel Summer, that's the name of the album and movie (yes, and also the name of that Bananarama song that was in "The Karate Kid"). Unfortunately, there's no release date as of yet, but the word "Summer" is in the title, so it has to come out at some point in the next 3 months, right? Can't have a cruel summer in October, that'd just be weird.

If you're looking for more Cruel Summer possibilities, Marc Hogan of Spin wrote 5 safe assumptions about it. Not a bad read.

Chief Keef - I Don't Like (Remix) (feat. Pusha T, Kanye West, Big Sean, & Jadakiss)

For some odd reason Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music crew (plus Jadakiss) have decided to jump on shitty new rapper Chief Keef's shitty song I Don't Like. I can't lie, I really don't like that with all the good young artists out there, Kanye picked this scrub to help out, but let's go ahead and this remix a go.

Yep, just as shitty as the original. Maybe 10% better, but still pretty trash. This nigga Chief Keef makes 2 Chainz sound like Biggie lyrically, he's that bad. I don't give a shit if he's only 16, dude is GARBAGE. Real nigga shit, is he any better than Lil B? Seriously, go listen to that nigga's verse again (if your ears can bare) and tell me he's that much better than Lil B. I'm so disappointed in Kanye. Helping out wack ass rappers, that's that shit I don't like.

Speaking of shit I don't like, did you hear the original producer, Young Chop, is pissed at Kanye because he remixed this struggle music? Go ahead and take a listen to what this extra moist ass fool had to say.

Sigh. Where do I even begin?

First off, how are you gonna sue someone for remixing your track for free? I hope he doesn't think garbage ass Chief Keef actually paid for this feature. (Then again, judging by the stupidity of the nigga I heard on the audio above, it's a possibility.) I'm sure Keef has made a few coins since this doo doo ass record popped up, but not enough to afford a verse from Kanye. Regardless, what is he gonna sue Kanye for? Enhancing his profile? Extending his 15 minutes of fame? Really, what? Besides, I seriously doubt it's against the law to remix a track this nigga probably made on Fruity Loops with a Lex Luger drum kit.

Second, did this idiot really just say Kanye better call his phone before he snaps? Nigga, who are you, and what exactly is you "snapping" gonna do? I'd like to know what Young Chop "snapping" entails, what is he gonna do, go hunt down Kanye and beat him up? He can't do shit but sue Kanye and eventually get his case thrown out, so yeah, snap away pal.

Lastly, why is the FUCK is the dude mad at Kanye, when essentially all he did was do he and Chief Keef a favor? The record was doing okay, but it's not like it was a huge smash hit. If anything, it was dying down and Keef was on a steady path to YC-dome until Kanye idiotically decided to breathe life into it with this remix. And this is how you re-pay him? You don't ride the wave, you go on Twitter and some little radio show and diss him? ONE OF THE BIGGEST RAPPERS IN THE WORLD JUST TWEAKED AND RAPPED OVER YOUR BEAT AND YOU'RE BITCHING ABOUT IT, PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME HOW THIS MAKES ANY FUCKING SENSE?!?!

People always wonder why some artists don't go back to where they're from and help others out once they blow up, but ungrateful ass bitch niggas like Young Chop are exactly why they don't. I swear niggas are just getting dumber and fucking dumber, and that's that shit I don't like. Sad.

Thursday Billboard Update - 4/12/12

Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (which I finally found out was a new album and not a re-release) debuts at #1 with 253,000 sold. I thought she would sell more, but oh well. Madonna's MDNA, which sold 359,400 copies last week, falls to #8 with 48,000 sold, down 86.7%. That's the greatest 2nd-week sales decline for a #1 album since SoundScan began tracking sells in 1991. Kanye Appears On 106 & Park, His Voice Doesn't

To be fair to Kanye, they didn't even ask him any questions. This was the single worse use of Kanye since 808s & Heartbreak.

G.O.O.D. Music - Mercy (feat. Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz)

Okay, it's finally here, the first single off the G.O.O.D. Music album. Enjoy!

This shit is pretty tough, but there's a couple thing I just don't get about it:

1. What's with the intense, creepy techno beat that came in when Kanye spit? I don't mind it as much now that I've heard it a few times, but it doesn't make it any less weird.

2. Why is 2 Chainz featured on the track? I know he's one of the "hottest" rappers out, but isn't this supposed to be a G.O.O.D. Music project? There's nothing longer enough rappers on the label to fill up 4 slots? Where was CyHi?

Other than that (and Big Sean's super corny verse), I think this record is dope. Not as dope as Theraflu, but dope nonetheless. Big Sea

Kanye West Finally Gets His Ho Girl

Generally I don't do gossip stories, but after the release of Theraflu last night, I thought it would be important to mention it appears Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are now dating.
